According to Sigmund Freud, the balancing of the id, ego and superego is the key to a healthy personality. What then is the id, ego and superego?

The ID is the unconscious component of the three. It is ruled by the PLEASURE PRINCIPLE, which seeks to gratify immediately all wants, needs or urges. If the id has it way, it will cause disruptive behaviours. For instance, a lady sees someone holding a pizza, and since her appetite has been stirred up, and her id wants to have that pizza immediately, she then snatches the pizza from the person to gratify her appetite. Or a man grabs a woman he doesn’t know on the road, and gives her a kiss, because his id is in control.

The EGO is ruled by the REALITY PRINCIPLE. It realizes that grabbing a woman who isn’t your wife, for a kiss, and snatching someone’s pizza isn’t proper. So it brings people to reality, and delays gratification until the right time and place.

The SUPEREGO is the component of the three that houses all of our morals, which have been built over time, from our parents, society and religion. The superego helps to control the wants(pleasures) of the id, and strengthens the ego to work based on reality.

For instance, when your id tells you to steal NOW, your ego says this is not the right time and place, and your superego, the one that holds your morals says, “stealing isn’t good.”

So what’s my point here?

Humans have three very powerful appetites– food, sex and drink.

If they are not controlled, they will control a person by default. They are the id that deals with the pleasure principle.

When we eat unhealthy foods, we get a diseased body.

When we drink too much, for example, alcohol, we destroy our liver.

When we abuse sex, having sex before marriage, with everyone we date, to see if we are sexually compatible, or even having extramarital affairs, we destroy our soul.

The abuse of these three brings destruction.

Our superego helps suppress the desires of our id, and it’s based on morals. It depends on your morals, how well built is it? When you know that you don’t just eat anything you see, drink too much or have sex with someone who isn’t committed(married) to you, you behave accordingly.

Our ego delays the needs of the id to the appropriate time and place. It delays sex to when you are married.

Esau sold his birthright for a plate of porridge, because he couldn’t control his id. His hunger was too powerful that he couldn’t delay gratification. He saw his birthright as worthless.

“Look, I’m dying of starvation!” said Esau. “What good is my birthright to me now?”

Gen 25:29

id ruled over him, and as a result, he became a nonentity in life. Maybe he thought that after eating the meal, he could get it back, but little did he realize that once it’s gone, it’s gone.

“there should be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal. (Hebrews 12:16))

The Apostle Paul said in the Phillipians church that those whose god is their appetite, their belly, are headed for destruction. Those who value their appetites to the things of GOD, are headed for destruction.

“They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.”

Phillipians 3:19

They glory in things that are shameful –have you seen my girlfriends? They are so hot

And all their focus is on the things of the earth; things that will fade away tomorrow, the temporal things. They forget that one day they will die and give account for their lives. Truly speaking, nothing on earth is worth losing your soul for.

“And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?” Mark 8:36

Everything here will pass away.

“Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord (phillipians 3:8)

But we, the children of God, though in this world, but not of this world, think about the things of the kingdom of God; the eternal things. “But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.” (Phil 3:20)

These three, id, ego and superego are always at war. Your id always wants to win. And according to Freud, a person with a strong EGO STRENGTH (the balance of the three), is capable of overcoming the pressures of the id; delaying gratification until the right time and place. But one with poor ego strength, yields to the pressures and lives a destructive life.

You can have a strong ego strength, if you have self control. Everything boils down to self control. For a man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls (prov 25:28)

Self control is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps you overcome pressures

“So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.”

Zechariah 4:6

Have you ever thought, ” I know this is bad but I keep doing it, even when I resolve not to.”? Yeah, you’re right! You can’t force it. It’s just human nature. That’s why we need the help of the holy spirit, and he comes through accepting Jesus into your life. If you are set to receive Jesus into your life, Please say this prayer:

Dear Lord, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Now I know I am born again! In Jesus name, Amen!

Congrats 😀 you made the right decision.

With the help of the holy spirit, everything, circumstances, your id comes under your control.

With Love
