Finish Well

My phone rang thrice, but I was reluctant to pick it up. when I finally did, I realized it was a teacher from my high school. Not just any teacher, but my favourite. I was overly excited to hear his voice after some good 2 years of not hearing anything about him.
As we conversed, he asked me about my spiritual life. And I gave an affirmative answer to his question. He concluded by saying, ” Esohe, remember that it’s only those that endure to the end that will receive the crown.” For months now this statement has been reverberating in my spirit. And today I stumbled on a message titled, “finishing well.”
Let me share with you a little bit of what I learnt

We have so many great starters but very few finishers. Many started the race very well but only few would finish strong, because some would fall on the way side or finish weakly. And God is not interested in anyone that holds on to the plow and then looks back (luke 9:62) He’s not interested in starters, in those that would say but father, I was once this or that. He’s only interested in those that are in present terms with him not in the past.

28 “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? 29 Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you. 30 They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’

In the above scripture that Jesus narrated, everyone laughed, ridiculed and mocked the man in the scenario, because he didn’t and couldn’t finish. They said, “I told you that he will not last long. You have seen it for yourself.” What a shame! Starting our assignment and stopping along the way side brings shame to God, to oursleves and gives the devil an edge over us. The devil uses those that don’t finish well to discourage the hearts of upcoming generations. For instance, He would say, ” relax, stop carrying this thing on your head. Don’t you see the other man, Mr so and so. That’s how he was too, but see him now.” And if that person doesn’t know who he really is in Jesus, he would give in.

From the story of Job I know that God boasts over his children
Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”
The devil didn’t ask God, but what a proud father he was and still is. He immediately asked the devil if he has considered Job. The devil had to answer, “how can I consider him when you have put an hedge of protection over him.” Then God had to remove the hedge to allow the devil get access to job and In fact instructed the devil on the extent to which he could go. it would be a shame if we would fail the tests that God would allow the devil to bring upon us after he is done boasting about us. Job passed the test 😀 what a joy! He put a smile on God’s face. He made God carry his shoulder high and say to the devil, “you see now! I told you that he fears me and honours my word, but you hesitated.”

God is pleased and proud when we complete the assignment he has given us. The utmost desire of the enemy is to see that we don’t get to the finish line. So he brings things that are enticing and appealing. Friends, jealously guard your destiny. It’s your treasure. The enemy is fighting tooth and nail to make sure he steals, kills and destroys it.

Will you, reading this, pass the numerous tests that will come your way? Please don’t disappoint God; don’t put him to shame

Ecclesiastes 7 emphasizes on the end of a thing
It reminds us that the day of our death is what counts; it is far better than the day we were born. Because that day is the end of our sojourn on earth and the beginning of eternity. it would determine whether we will receive the crown or not.
It further emphasizes the importance of going to the house of mourning than the house of feasting, I think figuratively. Because in that area you are gonna remember that one day you will also leave this earth and this will help you to better prepare for the day of your death.

It’s better not to begin at all, than to begin and not finish.
Life is a race and for you to get to the end successfully, you must overcome the things that would sway you to not finish well.

Apostle Paul was so heavily conscious with finishing the race that was assigned to him. Nothing mattered to Jesus than to finish the work that was assigned to him. The two of them are typical examples of those that carefully identified and avoided obstacles to their finishing well.

But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God
Acts 20:24

“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
John 4:34

What about you? Have you lost your savour or the passion that you once had when God gave you your assignment?

Sexual immorality, embezzling money, lying and anything that doesn’t please God are capable of robbing us of the crown that we are to receive on the day we are gonna stand before God to give an account of what we did here on earth.

Don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be deceived: No sexually immoral people, idolaters, adulterers, or anyone practicing homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
1 cor 6:9

Just as my teacher told me, it is only those that endure to the end that will receive the crown, not the beginners.

Resolve to flee from anything that would prevent you from finishing well. But you must remember that will power isn’t enough to help you finish well, the spirit of God is critical. For it is not by might but by the Spirit says The Lord
May God help us in Jesus name. Amen!
Have a blessed day
