I have always been so intrigued by the mornach butterfly. It’s one creature that presses my thinking mode button. From an ugly caterpillar that crawls to an eye catching butterFLY. How does that work? So I did a little bit of a research and agreed that its lifecycle depicts the process we humans are to go through to become leaders of substance.
From the egg stage to the caterpillar stage to the pupa is a journey that must be traveled in order for the hidden butterfly to emerge.
In this regard, I have decided to do a series on leadership from what I have learnt so far, titled METAMORPHOSIS. When you hear this five syllable word, what comes to your mind? Let me prompt you 🙂 I am sure your mind travels down memory lane to primary four or so, and you remember your then biology teacher standing in front of your classroom, with her torturous stick and from that point, she calls out, “we are gonna be doing metamorphosis today, the life cycle of an insect. We will learn the four stages of insects. The egg stage, the larva, the pupa and then the adult” On the board you would see something like this
Did I strike a chord? Maybe not totally 😀
Therefore, I will be sharing with you tips and tips of what I have LEARNT so far and what am STILL learning about leadership. Come take a metamorphosis ride with me 😉
The egg stage (mind) of leadership.
Inside of you is a powerful leader, but you have to go through a process to manifest that leader, just like the butterfly. Therefore, we will be tackling the egg stage of leadership first, which is your mind.
Can we have a Brainwash?
All of the stories of slavery and oppression can be represented in the stories of two men. Edward, a black man, was once a freeman, but he got deceived and found himself in the dungeon of cruel white men. He was beaten and brainwashed into servitude. First they made him accept that he’s a slave through series of beatings and they conveyed to him how inferior is the colour of his skin. Then they changed his name from Michael into lit. He refused to reply to the name at first, but when he was thoroughly whipped, he succumbed. The end of it all was that Solomon started thinking like a slave, which translated into the way he communicated and the way he acted. (From 12 years a slave… But I twisted some parts 🙂 )
The second is the story of Mandela. Mandela’s story is quite similar and at the same time contrary to Edward’s story. He was sentenced to 27 years in prison for his conviction and yet, he never changed it. What a man!!!! In the course of these years, Mandela fought daily for his conviction. During an interview, Mandela said when he first got into prison, he was told that he must do whatever is said to him as long as he’s imprisoned. He said that he decided from the first day, “I’ll not do whatever they tell me.” Because if you ever give in for the first time you can never come back… Mandela knew the power of the mind, so he protected it. Because if you take the power of the mind lightly, you may never recover from the repercussions that a polluted mind would produce.
Adolf Hitler was an incalculable tyrant. He brainwashed the Germans through the use of propaganda. He knew that if you can penetrate your thoughts into people’s minds, then you have gotten them totally. And yes, he won!!!
These and many more stories are a testament to the power the mind holds. The mind is a battlefield. If you lose in your mind, you lose in life, because you can never go beyond your thoughts.
It’s no wonder the bible says, ” As a man thinks in his heart, so is he”
Your mind births your reality.
You may wonder why I am putting these stories on the table. I will tell you in a bit.
In order to be a leader, you must first think leadership. That’s, you must have the consciousness that you were born to be a leader and that you have the capacity in you.
This is the egg stage of leadership.
Leadership doesn’t begin from having a position. It starts from the mind. So your mind has to be renewed from all that junk society has placed in it. Sometimes I hear parents tell their children, “you good for nothing child” sometimes I see teachers undermine the abilities of a student. They say “Your IQ is very low, you will never amount to anything in life”
And when the person hears this continuously, the mind is been conditioned to think that maybe it’s true. No wonder I fail all the time; no wonder I make many mistakes. I think am not good at anything. I can’t be a leader, I was born to be a follower. This kind of people start thinking that leadership is for the specially gifted; they now become passive. So they watch change happen and never partake in making it happen. This is the state of our world today. Break loose!
Africa’s history of oppression has conditioned 95% of Africans to think small. In other words, we watch change happen but we never think we CAN make change happen. And this is the hard truth. We do that unconsciously though. I was not born when my people were been oppressed, but I had seen those traits (inferiority complex, etc) in me until I got renewed with the word of God. The word of God like a mirror, showed me the real me when I saw scriptures like:
A) So God created HUMANS (black, white, brown, etc) in his own IMAGE
In the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
B) Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it.
C) You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.”
D) You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
E) How precious are your thoughts about me,[b] O God.
They cannot be numbered!
I can’t even count them;
they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up,
you are still with me!
F) You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.
G) The LORD will hold you in his hand for all to see–a splendid crown in the hand of God.
I also understood that God is too busy to create nonentities
So on and so forth… And you wonder why I would remain the same? No! I had to be brainwashed with the word of God… Because the educational system and all systems that make up the society fed me with too much junk to choke on… I rather choke on the word of God that would reflect my true image to my mind.
Because of the history of oppression that Africa has and most third world countries, we have people in authority that think like slaves. There’s this battle of passivity going on in their minds that make them think small.
“I have even seen servants riding horseback like princes” king Solomon said.
This is the state of our leadership, in not only Africa, but in many third world countries.
-No self confidence (inferiority complex)
-Have no opinion of their own(they do what the West tells them to do)
– They compromise their convictions
– No self esteem and sense of self worth
– They are too greedy. They accumulate at the expense of the welfare of their subjects
– They have an authoritarian style of leadership… In other words, they don’t want to serve, but they want to be served
– They stay in power forever
Africa and the world at large needs leaders who are more interested in people than in their private ambitions.
The children of Israel are an example of people who where set free physically but were still mentally bound.
Numbers 11: 4-5 “And the children of Israel also wept again and said who shall give us flesh to eat? We remember the fish which we did eat in Egypt freely the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic.”
You must break the shackles that have held your mind captive in order to be free physically. It doesn’t go from physical to mental, but vice versa.
Always remember that wearing a crown doesn’t make one royalty, rather, it is only when one’s mind thinks royalty that he/she becomes one. A crown is just an added advantage. Queen Elizabeth doesn’t need a crown to know that she’s royalty. She thinks it, then she talks and acts like royalty
To illustrate this point further: Wherever Queen Elizabeth lives, it would be called a “palace”, even when it’s a small hut. A Palace doesn’t make her Queen, rather, she makes a house a palace. This is the idea!
In Buckingham Palace, there are “Royal Nannies” These Nannies attend to the needs of the babies born into the Royal Family. They train the babies and teach them manners and behaviours that are appropriate for royals, how to conduct themselves, including how to bow to the queen. They mould their minds at the early stages of their lives, because they know the power of the mind. If you can catch them young, it would be easier. They instil in them that they are royalties and teach them what they can and cannot do. When they grow up, this mindset remains in them and make them think differently than the average human.
In a nutshell, a position (horseback) doesn’t make one think like a leader, leadership thoughts have to be present first in order to excel as a leader. A position is just an added advantage, and a platform to showcase what you have on the inside
“I have even seen servants riding horseback like princes” King Solomon said.
Break loose from the shackles that have held your mind captive for so long. Think leadership in order to be a leader. It all begins from the mind!!!!
The next on the Metamorphosis Series is titled, ” The Leader in You” The Larva (caterpillar) Stage
